Madeira Organ Festival 2015

As part of the project "Cultural Festivals of Madeira", the Madeira Organ Festival reaches, with the completion of its sixth edition, another level of growth, maturity and affirmation of its own and public within all those who annually constitute and materialize it (whether as spectators, performers and/or organizers) as well as in other similar projects, whether national or international.

The organistic heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is inextricably linked to the history of the archipelago, with almost six centuries, since the construction of the first Iberian organs in the Cathedral of Funchal and Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Machico, by order of D. Manuel, through the importation of several Iberian organs in the Cathedral of Funchal and Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Machico. From the building of the first Iberian organs in the Cathedral of Funchal and the Church of Nossa Senhora de Conceição in Machico by order of King Manuel, to the importing of various examples from England during the heyday of the merchants who traded in Madeira Wine, until the present day, the path of this remarkable instrument, once dubbed the "king of instruments", has been through various cycles, unfortunately sometimes antagonistic but important for the understanding and awareness of today.

Based on the previous analysis, the Regional Government, through the Regional Directorate of Culture, has implemented in recent decades several measures aimed not only at the preservation of part of the organistic heritage of Madeira but also its enhancement and dissemination, through this festival, thus assuming its role as a facilitator of experiences and various thematic proposals, creating the best conditions for the local and tourist community autonomously define their habits and cultural development.

Occupying an important position in the universe of cultural events in Madeira, it will never be too much to analyze and understand the impacts that arise from its realization, namely in its aspects of promotion, development of local attractiveness, growth of cultural tourism and identification and commitment of the entire Madeira community to its heritage and culture, making them active agents and enhancers of the same beyond borders, to the extent that the event remains beyond the Festival, generating promotion and recognition of Madeira and its cultural offer in this area.

The concern that the organization of this festival has in offering a program as eclectic as possible aims to stimulate and seduce an increasingly diverse audience, of all age groups, to the richness and dynamism of the organ and its music, and the multiple feelings and emotions generated in each of the spectators is, without a doubt, the main reason for its existence.

VI Festival de Órgão da Madeira

O Festival de Órgão da Madeira chega à sua sexta edição. Ao longo dos últimos anos, dezenas dos mais significativos organistas estrangeiros e portugueses apresentaram, a solo ou em colaboração com outros instrumentistas, cantores ou agrupamentos, mais de meia centena de concertos com programas diversificados - da Idade Média aos nossos dias, dos autores centrais do repertório organístico à improvisação, da polifonia renascentista ao jazz - perante um público global de milhares de pessoas. O nível artístico, a diversidade da programação e a adesão do público garantiram, só por si, um lugar de destaque para este evento no panorama nacional e internacional. Mas o Festival de Órgão da Madeira é também o coroar de uma ação - também ímpar em Portugal - de consistente preservação e divulgação do património organístico, da qual resultou a recuperação de uma dezena de instrumentos, a construção de um grande órgão, a realização de vários registos fonográficos e a edição de um inventário de todo o património organístico madeirense.

Este ano, seguindo as linhas de orientação manifestadas desde a sua criação, o Festival de Órgão da Madeira continua, por um lado, a explorar a diversidade do património organístico madeirense e, por outro, a oferecer uma programação variada e um leque de artistas de âmbito nacional e internacional. No campo dos recitais de órgão solo destaca-se o concerto de abertura na Igreja do Colégio pelas mãos de Olivier Latry, um dos titulares do órgão da Catedral de Notre-Dame em Paris. Outros recitais incluem um programa inglês na Igreja de Santa Luzia pela organista Ann Elise Smoot e uma homenagem à escola ibérica a cargo de Sérgio Silva no órgão da Igreja de Machico, o mais precioso instrumento histórico da Região. No âmbito da música de conjunto, para além de um concerto de coro e órgão com o jovem organista André Bandeira, um concerto centrado no repertório setecentista de raiz italiana pelo Ludovice Ensemble e uma exótica mescla de cante alentejano (e outras manifestações vocais) e órgão pelo grupo Cantechão, destaca-se o programa dedicado a Johann Sebastian Bach na Igreja do Colégio, com Élio Carneiro no grande órgão Dinarte Machado e Sérgio Silva no órgão Machado e Cerveira, que soará pela primeira vez após o seu recente restauro. O concerto de encerramento é marcado pela presença de Lorenzo e Vittorio Ghielmi, oferecendo as sonoridades do órgão, do cravo e da viola da gamba no espaço inigualável da Igreja do Convento de Santa Clara.
