Martin André attended the Yehudi Menuhin School (where he studied piano) and studied music at the University of Cambridge. He made his professional debut conducting a chamber version of Aida for Welsh National Opera, where he was resident conductor for several seasons. During this time he conducted a vast amount of repertoire, paying particular attention to Italian opera of the 19th century. Between 1993 and 1996 he was Musical Director of English Touring Opera, conducting operas both in London and throughout the United Kingdom. In 1996 he was a Conducting Fellow of the Arts Foundation. Martin André is the only conductor who has conducted all the major British opera companies. Since he left his position at the Welsh National Opera, he has conducted the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Scottish Opera, English National Opera, Opera North and Northern Irish Opera. In 2000 he directed a production, recorded live for the BBC in London the Le Nozze di Fígaro. He currently divides his professional career between opera houses and concert halls, directing renowned orchestras. His international career includes engagements in Albania, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland and the USA.
