Cinema cycle

Taking as a starting point the showing of La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc by Carl Dreyer, this brief series of films which takes place within the festival explores the presence of the organ in the cinema, including films in some way related to the instrument. The relation is clear in Mein Name ist Bach, by Dominique de Rivaz (2003), and in Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach, by Jean-Marie Straub, in which we “really” see Johann Sebastian Bach playing the organ, played by Gustav Leonhardt. In Sunset Boulevard, by Billy Wilder (1950), the relation is subtler – the organ is a central element of the bizarre decoration of the mansion of Norma Desmond (the star of silent cinema, removed from reality, superbly played by Gloria Swanson), employed notably in a scene in which it is played by the butler (Eric von Stroheim).
